11 terms used in international shipping - Chambers and Cook

Posted by Chambers and Cook on Jul 25, 2018 12:00:00 AM

We understand: all you want is for your goods to be transported from point A to point B.

However, the two parties that are involved in any international shipping contract – buyer and seller – each have different payment responsibilities which will alter depending on the kind of delivery taking place. You should know what you are responsible for organising and paying for, and if a cargo happens to arrive in poor shape, which party is responsible for having provided the insurance cover.

The Logistics Behind Mutiny - Chambers and Cook

Posted by Chambers and Cook on Jul 25, 2018 12:00:00 AM

If you like to spend your evenings in front of the telly, chances are you might have seen the trailer for Mutiny, an exciting documentary that premiers this week on Channel 4. The show follows a crew of nine as they attempt to re-enact the famous Mutiny on the Bounty, when Captain of HMS Bounty Lieutenant William Bligh and 18 of his loyal shipmates were given the heave-ho after the rest of the crew rebelled in 1789. They were cast adrift on the Pacific Ocean in a 23-foot long open vessel that gave but a fraction of the protection of the far larger HMS Bounty, and faced an arduous 4000-mile journey from Tonga to Timor.

CC Freight Ship Out of Gauge Consignment at Short Notice | CC Freight

Posted by Chambers and Cook on Nov 28, 2016 12:00:00 AM

At Chambers & Cook Freight, we pride ourselves on going the extra mile for our customers, saying yes to shipments that other logistics companies would deem impossible.

One such job was presented to us recently by inflatable dam specialist Dyrhoff, in the form of an inflatable rubber sheet that needed to be transported from the Czech Republic to Ontario in Canada. Weighing in at 10,000kg and with a length of 13.3m, this shipment was technically out of gauge, and therefore unable to be transported by standard means.

We quickly devised a plan for transportation of the rubber sheet, working with Dyrhoff to ensure the shipment would be as smooth as possible. Our plan entailed the consignment being collected from the supplier in the Czech Republic, and shipped on flat rack container via MSC from Antwerp Quay to the Port of Montreal. Once the shipment had cleared customs, the sheet would be unloaded and delivered on a flat-bed vehicle to its final destination in Smooth Rock Falls.

Time was of the essence – the client required delivery ASAP, meaning that we had to come up with a solution quickly. We contacted our network of usual hauliers, but none were available to pick up the consignment from the Czech Republic due to restrictions on driving hours because of public holidays taking place at the time. This meant that trailer availability was unusually limited, but we were confident we could still find a resolution.

The supplier in the Czech Republic eventually managed to find a local haulier who was able to transport the consignment to Antwerp. There, Chambers & Cook Freight arranged for the inflatable rubber sheet to be unloaded, lashed, sheeted, and secured to a flat rack container, before being despatched to Montreal.

We were pleased to be able to come through for Dyrhoff on this occasion, successfully transporting an out of gauge consignment via special equipment at extremely short notice. We’re confident that we managed to ship this rubber sheet on the earliest available vessel, keeping both our client and their customer happy.

We worked closely with Dyrhoff on this project, as we have done several times already this year, shipping consignments originating in the UK, Europe and China. We’d like this opportunity to thank Dyrhoff for their continued support, and look forward to working with them in future.

If you have an unusual or out of gauge shipment, we’re confident that Chambers & Cook are capable of facilitating its movement. Please get in touch with a member of our team by calling +44 (0)121 356 1441.

Enter the Chinese Foodstuffs Market with Chambers & Cook | CC Freight

Posted by Chambers and Cook on Sep 23, 2016 12:00:00 AM

As one of the world’s fastest developing economies, China has an enormous and highly lucrative foodstuffs market, and welcomes international imports. However, many exporters are reluctant to enter the Chinese market due to complicated regulations and import criteria, and are thus missing out on contracts that could be hugely profitable for their business.

At Chambers & Cook Freight, we recognise the potential of exporting to China, and have been working with our Chinese partner Focus Global Logistics to help companies access this market and reap the benefits.

SNACKSCM CO LTD, a directly affiliated subsidiary of Focus Global Logistics, is dedicated to importing foodstuffs to China, and have been developing their business in this field for many years. They have created an effective and efficient one-stop supply chain services platform based on their experience in the import market, and are able to offer international consultation, product match, international logistics, domestic distribution, and many more services.

Recently placeding 25th in a list of China’s top logistics enterprises, SNACKSCM are a company with a solid track record, and are proud to list the following certifications and affiliations:

SNACKSCM can help with…

International consultation

With the rapid growth of the imported foodstuffs market, the laws governing this sector have become more stringent; there are now many restrictions on ingredients, labelling requirements for Chinese consumers, packaging, accurate nutrient information, and export documents. This means that a product that performs well in its country of origin might not even be allowed to retail on Chinese supermarket shelves.

It can be an intimidating market to enter, but SNACKSCM are able to help exporters navigate through the paperwork and various legal requirements, ensuring that products reach Chinese consumers as quickly as possible.

Product match

There has recently been an increase in the number of importers looking for new oversees foodstuffs to introduce to the Chinese market, but many of these companies don’t know how to actually make this happen. SNACKSCM can work with potential importers to source new products from around the world and bring these to China, managing every aspect of the process from discovery to delivery.

International logistics

As a subsidiary of Focus Global Logistics, SNACKSCM have access to an international network of logistics companies, including Chambers & Cook Freight in the UK. Focus Global Logistics have been operating for over ten years and have the experience and know-how to get your products to China safely and on time, so you can gain access to a whole new market of potential customers in a matter of weeks.

How can Chambers & Cook help?

Through working with Focus Global Logistics and SNACKSCM, we are able to offer a range of services to companies interested in exporting to the Chinese market. Our team would be happy to discuss any of the following with you:

  • Selling to Chinese importers
  • Chinese label production
  • International shipping

Please get in touch with a member of the Chambers & Cook Freight team by calling +44 (0)121 356 1441 and our team would be happy to put you in touch with the relevant member of SNACKCSM who will be able to assist you.

Longer is better | CC Freight

Posted by Chambers and Cook on Apr 20, 2016 12:00:00 AM

Chambers & Cook is a founding member of Palletforce and transports some 600 pallets every night between our Birmingham depot and the Palletforce hub at Burton on Trent. Moving this volume of pallets requires optimal utilisation of our equipment; previously we used up to seven 13.6 m double deck trailers to carry the load.

When additional licences were made available for Longer Semi Trailers (LSTs), we took the opportunity to apply for these and added two 15.6 m double deck trailers to our fleet.

These each provide an additional 8 standard pallet spaces, increasing pallet capacity by 17%. With a negligible effect on fuel this gives a great improvement in trunking efficiency. The only significant cost is the additional capital cost of the trailers, which have a rear steering axle to comply with the same turning circle requirements of a standard 13.6 m trailer.

Posted by Chambers and Cook on Feb 12, 2014 12:00:00 AM

A GREAT-GRANDFATHER of six is putting the brakes on his lorry driving career after 50 years with the Chambers & Cook.

Don Fisher, 79, joined Chambers and Cook Freight Ltd, in Witton, Birmingham, on February 17, 1964.

Chambers and Cook Freight Ltd was set up in 1925 and has grown to become a worldwide distribution service and member of Palletforce, the UK and European’s palletised distribution network.

Don, of Bordesley Green, is their oldest and longest-serving employee, but he will retire after he reaches his 50th anniversary.

“This is the best company I’ve ever worked for and I’ve been really happy here which is why I never moved on,” said Don.

“It has grown a lot since I first started and the vehicles have got better and better as the fleet is updated regularly.

“I’ve got no plans for my retirement apart from to have a bit of a rest.”

Don, whose two sons are Artic drivers at Chambers and Cook Freight Ltd, originally drove HGVs for the company but now works part-time mainly delivering around Leicestershire and Worcestershire in a three-tonne vehicle.

“We are very proud of Don’s remarkable achievement of 50 years’ service,” said Chris Blackburn, Operations Director at Chambers and Cook Freight Ltd.

On Saturday night Chambers & Cook showed their appreciation for Don’s remarkable length of service by throwing a ‘retirement party’ at the Aston Villa ground.

The Directors, staff, family members, retired drivers and friends of Don had a wonderful night and would like to wish Don all the very best in his retirement.

Good luck Don, and keep in touch!
